Too hot to keep the laptop open
It's been hot, and my enthusiasm for opening the laptop again after work has been fairly limited.
There are things I could do on this site. There are always things I could do on this site. A small adjustment leads to another idea, which leads to a list, and suddenly a quiet evening has acquired a backlog. In this weather the list can wait.
I've been thinking about how easily a hobby involving a computer starts to resemble work. I enjoy making things, so it doesn't necessarily feel like a chore while I'm doing it. But it's still another stretch of sitting in front of a screen after a day spent doing much the same.
Cricket season is a welcome reason to point my attention elsewhere. So is simply being outside once the day is a bit less hot. Neither needs to produce an idea for a project or a useful lesson about development.
This isn't a dramatic decision to stop having side projects. I know I'll be back adjusting some tiny bit of CSS soon enough. For now, closing the lid feels like a perfectly good way to finish the day.
If the site sits unchanged for a little while, that's probably a fair reflection of where I'd rather be spending a summer evening.
