Trying CSS custom properties

The part I like about CSS custom properties is that they're available in the browser. A value can change with a class or a media query instead of being fixed when Sass compiles.

I'm trying them on small pieces first: colours and spacing that belong to a component. Naming still takes thought. A value named after what it's for is usually easier to change than one named after its current colour. I'll keep checking the browsers a project needs before depending on them.
